SMoCA Docent Program

Do you love contemporary art? Are you a great storyteller? Do you love learning and want to share that knowledge with others? Join our SMoCA Docent Program and immerse yourself in the amazing world of contemporary art.

Through this program, you’ll learn about museums, contemporary art and, most importantly, engagement techniques for all kinds of visitors. No special training or background in art is required, and applicants from all backgrounds are encouraged. You will be rewarded with opportunities to participate in SMoCA and across all branches of Scottsdale Arts in unique and exciting ways.

CANAL CONVERGENCE WATER + ART + LIGHT

November 2018

Description:
Canal Convergence is an annual signature event featuring large-scale interactive artworks by local and international artists, along with hands-on activities, live music and performances.

Needs:
Volunteers for information tables, artist talks and at various art locations/activities located along the Scottsdale Waterfront.

Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts
Ongoing Opportunities

Concierge Program

Description:
This position greets the public at a variety of events and performances, sells memberships and gives information and directions while helping promote the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts’ programs.

Needs:
Outgoing, reliable individuals who are willing to learn new information on a regular basis.

Requirements:
2–3 hour shifts, professional attire, outgoing personality.

Usher Program

Description:
Ushers are expected to scan tickets, know the safety procedures of the theater and maintain order while greeting and directing patrons to their seats during events.

Needs:
Ushers for presented and rental events; 3–4 hour shifts, mostly nights and weekends.

Requirements:
Must be able to walk up and down stairs, operate in dimly lit conditions and read small print on tickets. Must be professional, reliable and courteous.

Volunteer Training session:

Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018, 10 a.m.–noon
Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2018, 6 p.m.–8 pm

Training sessions will be held in Stage 2 and must be completed before any ushering duties are carried out. RSVP to Volunteer@ScottsdaleArts.org to attend one of the sessions. Current ushers are required to attend one training session a year.

 

Artist Merchandise Sales

Description:
Assistance in selling artist merchandise during performances. Items range from vinyl albums/CDs to T-shirts to posters, depending on the artist.

Needs:
Two volunteers per shift.

Requirements:
Shifts vary depending on artist(s). Volunteers are expected to stay throughout the entire show unless stated otherwise. Must be comfortable handling money and credit cards.

Retail Volunteers

Description:
With stores in the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts building and at SMoCA, volunteers are needed to assist with sales and handling of a variety of merchandise.

Needs:
Outgoing, reliable individuals who are willing to showcase a variety of merchandise.

Requirements:
Shifts are noon–5 p.m., unless scheduled otherwise. Must be comfortable selling merchandise and interacting with visitors.

Box Office

Description:
A volunteer is needed to assist box office with will-call tickets in advance of performances.

Needs:
One volunteer per show.

Requirements:
Must be able to read tickets quickly and efficiently to keep the will-call lines short.

Education Events

Description:
A variety of educational events occur throughout the season for which assistance is needed. Various duties may be required, including helping direct students around the campus, participating in arts-and-crafts projects or running an activity.

Brazilian Day Arizona

Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018

Description:
A celebration of Brazil’s Independence Day, Brazilian Day Arizona is a family-friendly event that welcomes visitors of all ages. The day-long festival showcases both indoor and outdoor entertainment, including live performances and interactive demonstrations of Brazilian music, dance and martial arts.

Needs:
Volunteers to assist at admission gates, beverage booths and education stations.

Requirements:
Four-hour shifts. Must be able to stand for majority of the shift.

Celebration of the Arts for Children with Disabilities

November 2018

Description:
This eagerly anticipated event is held every fall on the Scottsdale Civic Center Mall, offering one of the few field trip opportunities available to students with mild to severe disabilities. Students participate in arts-and-crafts projects and are treated to storytelling, magic shows, music, dance, a live outdoor concert and more.

Needs:
Up to 50 volunteers, assisting students with arts-and-crafts projects, guiding groups to different stations and helping with pre-event craft preparation.

Requirements:
A big heart and a smile! 8 a.m.–noon.

Alli Ortega Empty Bowls

December 2018

Description:
Help raise funds to fight hunger in our community through the sale of handcrafted bowls created by local community artisans and youth. All proceeds are donated to Vista del Camino Social Services, which provides a variety of assistance for Scottsdale residents to meet basic needs of individuals and families in crisis, and to relieve economic and emotional stress.

Needs:
Two volunteers per shift. Volunteers sell bowls to guests attending performances.

Requirements:
A big heart and a smile! Must be comfortable handling money.

Sister’s Christmas Catechism

December 7-16, 2018

Description:
In an unusually jolly mood, Sister, the tart-tongued, ruler-wielding nun, teaches her students the story of the Nativity and asks for their help to solve the greatest Christmas caper ever — who swiped the gold that those three wise men gave to Baby Jesus? Using the latest forensic technology and her uncanny ability to detect guilt, Sister creates an unforgettable living Nativity with her students to expose the culprit.

Needs:
Eight volunteers per show to sing in the choir and be a part of the show.

Requirements:
Ability to have fun, not take yourself too seriously and smile!

Sunday A’Fair

Description:
Sunday A’Fair presents free outdoor concerts by top Arizona musicians in Scottsdale Civic Center Mall, along with an arts-and-crafts market, fun activities for children and families and free docent-led tours of the sculptures in the park.

Two volunteers to assist in the family area with arts-and-crafts projects.

49th Scottsdale Arts Festival

March 8–10, 2019

Description:
The Scottsdale Arts Festival is one of the premier arts festivals in the country. Held every March during the height of Scottsdale’s tourist season, the festival draws thousands of visitors over the course of a three-day weekend. Proceeds from the festival help support Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts’ programs.

Needs:
More than 300 volunteers in various areas:

Gates
Beverage stand (21+ years)
Family areas
Retail
Auction
Artist hospitality
Lemonade stand
Etc.

Requirements:
Full-day, eight-hour shifts. Volunteers are provided with lunch and T-shirts, and are required to attend one of two training sessions.

Annual Discovery Series Festival

April 2019

Description:
A festival celebrating the culture of the country chosen for the annual Discovery Series program.

Needs:
10 volunteers to assist with a variety of tasks, including: arts-and-crafts projects, artist hospitality, facilitating interactive activities, etc.

Scottsdale Culinary Festival

April 13–14, 2019

Description:
As the longest-running festival of its kind in the United States, the Scottsdale Culinary Festival draws more than 40,000 visitors looking to enjoy fabulous food, music and cooking demonstrations by some the nation’s top chefs.

Needs:
Over 300 volunteers for gates/admissions and food/beverage.

Requirements:
Volunteers are required to attend one of two training sessions. Must be 21+ years old to volunteer.

Description:
