Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts

The Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts (SCPA) hosts a variety of experiences including Broadway shows, classical music and rock concerts, concert dance performances, and everything in between. SCPA’s 2023-2024 season kicks off in September and is filled with a diverse range of voices, talents, and perspectives from around the world.

Volunteers support the SCPA and its events in a variety of ways. Volunteers also enjoy perks associated with the Center, including discounted tickets, entrance to a selection of shows they volunteer for, store discounts, and more!

We kindly ask volunteers to commit to ongoing service if participating in SCPA volunteer programs. For those interested in short-term service commitments, we invite you to participate in our special events (details further down).

Concierge Program

Volunteers in the concierge program greet the public at a variety of events and performances and give information and directions while helping promote Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts programs. Volunteers who enjoy socializing with patrons of all ages and keeping up to date with Scottsdale Arts activities may find this role appealing.

  • Shift length: 2–3-hour
  • Uniform: Professional attire
  • Work conditions require standing and sitting

Volunteers in the concierge program attend the volunteer training session and complete two concierge training shifts before carrying out concierge duties. We ask concierges to regularly attend monthly concierge meetings so they can stay informed of updates in the organization.

Usher Program

Volunteers in the usher program scan tickets and greet and direct patrons to their seats during events and performances. Ushers have a high level of contact with our patrons, often being the “go-to” person for patrons in need of assistance. Volunteers familiar with or interested in learning theater etiquette and procedures may enjoy this role.

  • Shift length: 3–4-hour
  • Uniform: Black pants and white shirt
  • Must be able to walk up and down stairs, often in dimly lit conditions
  • Must be able to read small print

Volunteers in the Usher Program attend both the volunteer and usher training sessions before carrying out usher duties. Ushers-in-training will be taught how to navigate our theater spaces, read and scan tickets, and assist with patron questions.

Artist Merchandise Sales

Some artists presenting at the SCPA utilize volunteers to help sell merchandise during performances. Volunteers in this sales role will familiarize themselves with the artist and their merchandise offerings, socialize with patrons, and handle cash and credit transactions. Volunteers with experience in retail and experience with operating an iPad may especially enjoy this role.

  • Varying shift length: Typically, 2-3 hours
  • Uniform: Professional attire
  • Must be able to handle cash and credit/debit cards

Volunteers assisting with artist merchandise sales must attend a volunteer training session. Once assigned this role, volunteers will be trained in the iPad-based card transaction system and cash handling procedures.

The Store

The Store at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts carries a curated selection of jewelry, apparel, toys, music, books, cards, and home and office decor. Volunteers in The Store socialize with guests, help them locate items and try on jewelry, and work with staff to maintain a good flow of traffic in the store. Volunteers who enjoy socializing, thrive in busy and energetic spaces, and love gift-giving may enjoy this role.

  • Shift length: 3–4-hour shifts
  • Uniform: Professional attire
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time

Volunteers in The Store must attend a volunteer training session. Once assigned this role, volunteers will be taught the layout and offerings of The Store.

Box Office

The Box Office is the first point of contact for patrons attending events and performances, assisting patrons with ticket purchases, membership sign-ups, and more. Box Office volunteers assist with will call, where patrons pick up their tickets shortly before the event. Volunteers who enjoy detail-oriented tasks and interacting with patrons of all ages may find this role appealing.

  • Shift length: 2-hour
  • Uniform: Professional attire
  • Must be able to work in a loud environment

Box Office volunteers must attend a volunteer training session. Once assigned this role, volunteers will learn how to locate and distribute will call tickets accurately.
