About the Event

Join us for a special artist talk by Phillip K. Smith III, followed by an encore performance of Four Shades by Nicole L Olson, in collaboration with intermedia artist Shomit Barua.

Please note there will be limited seating available, so plan to be standing or walking for the duration of the performance.

About the Performance

Four Shades is a collaboration between movement artist Nicole L Olson and intermedia artist Shomit Barua. Inspired by the subtle shifting of colors in Phillip K. Smith III’s Three Parallels, these four dances refer to discrete moments—the distinct relationships—that exist in the continuum of human emotion.

The original score is augmented by custom software that enables the individual cell phones of the audience to become discrete channels for spatialization and live manipulation of sonic texture.

About Phillip K. Smith III

After growing up in Southern California’s Coachella Valley, Phillip K. Smith III received a bachelor of fine arts and bachelor of architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design. From his Palm Desert, California, studio, he creates light-based work that draws upon ideas of space, form, color, light and shadow, environment, and change.

Featured in hundreds of online and print publications, Smith is known for creating large-scaled, temporary installations, such as Lucid Stead in Joshua Tree, California; Reflection Field and Portals at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival; ¼ Mile Arc in Laguna Beach, California; and The Circle of Land and Sky at the inaugural 2017 Desert X exhibition. All these installations are featured in his latest catalog, titled Five Installations, published by Grand Central Press. His public artworks are sited in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Kansas City, Nashville, Oklahoma City, and beyond, and the artist was recently commissioned to create permanent, light-based works for the cities of West Hollywood, California, and Bellevue, Washington. Smith’s work was included in the exhibition and catalog Unsettled, organized by the Nevada Museum of Art and artist Ed Ruscha in 2017.

About Shomit Barua

Shomit Barua is an intermedia artist specializing in ecoacoustics, responsive environments, and emergent narratives. His work is rooted in poetry and architecture, and reflects the shared tenets of contained space, economy of materials, and movement that is both physical and emotional. Combining everyday technologies with esoteric programming languages, he blurs the line between installation and performance and weaves together sound, object, and image. Digital and analog techniques are fused to investigate his core subject: the presence of the mind and body in a physical space.

Having collaborated with sculptors, dancers, musicians, architects, and visual artists, Barua believes that exploration of a motif is amplified—made “robust” and “thick”—through dialogue between disciplines. He holds a master of fines arts in poetry from Bennington College and teaches writing at Arizona State University while completing his doctoral research at ASU’s School of Arts, Media, and Engineering.
