Temporary public art is another aspect of public art in Scottsdale that provides opportunities for local artists to create site-specific public art installations. Scottsdale is a contributing city to the IN FLUX initiative, which is now on Cycle 10. This cycle includes 12 artworks in six cities across the Valley, including four works here in Scottsdale. In addition to IN FLUX, past temporary public art opportunities in Scottsdale included Local Light as part of the 2018 and 2019 Canal Convergence events and Live Mural Paintings at Scottsdale Quarter.

For much larger-scale, temporary public art, we have Canal Convergence. This is an annual, free, 10-night event at the Scottsdale Waterfront that celebrates the vibrant arts and culture community and recognizes the importance of water. The first official Canal Convergence was in 2012, and since then the event has evolved and grown. Each Canal Convergence features large-scale art installations created by local, national, and international artists. The overarching themes for the event each year are the confluence of water, art, light, interactivity, and sustainability.

Canal Convergence is celebrating its 10th anniversary this fall from November 4–13. To acknowledge the momentous occasion, this year’s featured theme is “Celebrating 10 Years of Water + Art + Light.” The event will present light-based public art and programming that embody Canal Convergence themes from the past and present to provide an authentic and immersive art experience in and around the Arizona Canal.
