Creative Aging Program Expands to Reach a Wider Audience

Older adults have been hit especially hard by the pandemic, and while staying at home is the best possible plan, the emotional side effects of isolation can range from boredom to depression.

In response, Scottsdale Arts Learning & Innovation has launched Memory Lounge: Home Visits to help alleviate the effects of isolation and offer social, cultural, and creative events to stimulate creativity and connection.

Memory Lounge is an arts program for people living with mild to moderate dementia-related illness and their care partners that has been held at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) for the last three yearsIn response to the current health crisis, Memory Lounge: Home Visits adapts this successful program by providing virtual museum tours and workshops led by local professional artists directly to your home via Zoom. We want to open it up to all folks who are sheltering in place, needing a creative boost in their schedules.

The fall season of Home Visits features three artists, who will each conduct two workshops. Participants will create a glazed vessel in a two-session workshop with ceramic artist Danielle Wood; experience interactive music, movement, and mindfulness with jazz singer and certified dementia practitioner Shannon Wallace; and learn to embroider imagery on watercolors and create a beaded cuff bracelet, both with visual artist Christy Puetz.
