Inspire

August 5, 2020

During these uncertain times, SMoCA has invited artists and staff to utilize our blog Inspire as an outlet to make meaningful connections by sharing personal reflections and insight into their practice.

This week Nicole L Olson, the artistic director of NicoleOlson|MovementChaos, talks about the performance, Blurring Whispers, that she created and performed live on our Twitch channel on Aug. 1, 2020. In case you missed it, you can watch a recording of the performance below.

Blurring Whispers
by Nicole L Olson

I had actually started working on a few phrases over the summer and after visiting SMoCA and being introduced to Asami Yoshiga’s The Other Side 1, I was moved to create work with this beautiful piece. The beautiful images viewed as you gaze on The Other Side 1, from the gently painted leaves on the fabric to the translucent light that shines through it from SMoCA’s skylight inspired me to dance with it; make it part of the choreography. The first section was a piece I created and performed in a completely different setting and staging; using fans under a large, long skirt so the costume had “choreography” of it’s own. I thought the movement would be transformed, taking on a whole new meaning from behind Yoshiga’s piece. It represents isolation and blurred sounds that we are unable to hear now in our own experiences during the pandemic. The second section is about growth and expanding into the unknown, both exciting and frightening at the same time. The last few moments represent seeing our own personal experiences, no matter how large or small, from a different vantage point.
