Geibral Elisha will perform a solo concert for the Center’s Summer Streams series on July 17.

We Talk with Summer Streams Performer Geibral Elisha

Geibral Elisha is the band leader of The Geibral Elisha Movement (G.E.M.). Well known locally, Geibral and G.E.M.’s music stems from spiritual jazz, with rich complexity, improvisation, and often strong visual ties.

Prior to Geibral’s livestream on July 17, the Center’s senior programming coordinator, Diandra Adamczyk, chatted with Elisha about how the artist is adapting to the times and keeping inspired. Make sure to tune into our Summer Streams livestream performance this at 6:00 p.m. Friday, July 17, for a special chance to experience an intimate solo set with Elisha at home.

The Geibral Elisha Movement

Diandra Adamczyk: What do you miss most about performing live for an audience?

Geibral Elisha: The thing I miss most about playing in front of a live audience is the energy you get from the engagement of the audience. It’s a unique level of bliss, and it’s a rush at the same time.

The Geibral Elisha Movement

DA: How’ve you been keeping inspired as of recently?

GE: I’ve been inspired through meditation. It’s a different type of music, but I think that’s what makes music evolve—taking advantage of the situations that arise by making the most of them.

DA: What kind of things are you and G.E.M. working on these days?

GE:  Right now, we’re all just enjoying our time with our families. We’ve been in touch, and we check in on each other. I have been spending this time being present with my family.

DA: What are some aspects of the local jazz/art scene that you look forward to getting back to?

GE: I look forward to seeing the people mingle and go out to First Friday. Phoenix had a really solid community in terms of the arts and music. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone out having a good time. It’s what makes us human.

Livestream: Make sure to catch Elisha live at 6:00 p.m. tonight. If you like what you hear, please drop a tip for the artist between 6:00 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. tonight at The majority of your contribution during this timed donation window goes directly to the featured artist, and the remainder bolsters our Scottsdale Arts COVID-19 Relief Fund. For details about streaming the concert, click here.
