Learn ancestral practices to create a unique seed-paper painting and poem

Join Ayling Dominguez and Angelina Mann to explore the ancestral practice of making natural pigments from nocheztli (cochineal), an insect that lives on nopal cactus throughout the Southwest United States and México. Learn about the cultural history of nopal and cochineal while creating your own cochineal pigments. Then paint a sunset-inspired work of art on plantable seed paper and pair it with a Mexican haiku, inspired by José Juan Tablada. Leave with a unique seed-paper painting and poem that can be planted anywhere.

Pre-registration required. Please arrive 15 minutes early. All tours and workshops meet or take place in the Nationwide Innovation Zone unless otherwise noted.

Biography: Ayling Zulema Dominguez is a poet, educator, and culture worker who dreams, writes, and creates toward a borderless world with rematriated lands. Their writing and artistry asks us to nurture collective care and kinship in place of extractivism and exploitation of Native lands. As Nahua and Dominican diaspora, Ayling's storytelling is rooted in the knowledge of the mountains and the ocean. Ayling is an assistant professor of creative writing at Arizona State University and has published poetry with The Poetry Project, Yalobusha Review, The Seventh Wave, The Texas Review, Huizache, Alebrijes Review, and Beyond Borders Literary Review, among others.

Angelina Mann is a Cherokee author and poet, currently pursuing a juris doctor degree at Arizona State University. Born and raised in Arizona, her poetry focuses on the natural beauty of the desert. Her work is published with The Devil’s Inkwell and Peregrinos y sus letras.

Center for Imagination in the Borderlands at Arizona State University is an Indigenous-centered creative research space, exploring Arizona’s deserts, waters, language, borders, and storytelling across generations.
