Kristine Kollasch, Max Hammond, Paige Tuhey, and Sam Mindrum Logan

As part of the restoration of a 40 year old church being renovated into the City of Scottsdale’s Redevelopment and Urban Design Studio, the Public Art Program selected artists Max Hammond, Paige Tuhey and Kristine Kollasch to paint murals on the interior walls of the building. Gilbert artist Sam Mindrum Logan, who also worked on the Bringing People Together art bus public art project, painted a mural in the outdoor patio of the building titled A Celebration of Diversity: The Lines that Connect in prisma color, acrylic and monoprint.

Untitled Mural by Kollasch and Tuhey CollaborationThe space inside the Community Design Studio building allowed the two artists to incorporate a playful transition between two and three dimensional art. Kollasch’s background in 3D graphics, faux finishes and project management combined with Tuhey’s masterful eye and experience dealing with color and figurative elements brought together diverse and complimentary skills to the project.

Max Hammond has a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of Utah and a master’s degree in Fine Arts from Arizona State University (ASU), where he also taught drawing classes. His mural inside the Community Design Studio combines vivid paint hues, with transparent colors submerged in geometric shapes and vibrant clouded swatches of abstracted form. He writes in response to his mural…”it submerges, reemerges, squares, patterns, transparent liquid swirling in a jar, rain running off, soil too parched to receive its gift, rusty pieces of metal lying in the gravel by the railroad tracks, hair gathering light from the sun like a halo…”

A Celebration of Diversity: The Lines that Connect by Sam Mindrum-Logan
With an emphasis on the diverse community and cultures living together in Arizona, the mural was painted in a style that reflects connectedness, and an ever-changing reality. Painted with an earth-tone palette, the figures are conjoined and disconnected in a whimsical manner including Native American iconography combined with landscapes and exciting textures. Mindrum-Logan chose to emphasize the hope and resilience of the human spirit with this series of large scale wall paintings. Sam Mindrum-Logan’s work can also be found at the Casa Grande Art Museum, the Shemer Art Center, Mars Art Based Print Series and the Gilbert Public Library, just to name a few.
